Another UNESCO World Heritage Site can be found in Xaghra. Older than Stonehenge in England and the pyramids of Egypt, the Ggantija Temples complex is a definite ‘must see’ for your list.
Beautifully laid out with accessible walkways and a striking visitor centre, the site holds two temples along with a large forecourt, constructed by the same builders for the congregation.
The centre also houses some of the most important finds from other prehistoric sites on Gozo.
Dating back to between 3600 and 3200BC, some of the megaliths are over five metres in length and weigh over 50 tons and this led to the belief that giants built the complex (Ggantija is the Maltese for giant).
